Waangkiny Yira (Speaking Up)
PICA welcomes Perth Nyoongar poet and performer, Daniel Hansen as he leads Poetic Reflections and the Waangkiny Yira Wordshop as part of NAIDOC week 2019.
Join us for a collaboration of culture where spoken word meets and interacts with indigenous contemporary art. Under this year’s NAIDOC theme of ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’, it is also an opportunity to understand the role of spoken word language and activism in reclaiming identity.
Poetic Reflections Part 1 is an exploration of concepts presented by HATCHED 2019 indigenous artist, Dennis Golding. Don’t miss Daniel’s poetry performance with Golding’s ‘Empowering Identity’, a two-channel video stream featuring the motif of a superhero cape. Hansen will respond and add Nyoongar perspectives to Golding’s critical view of social, political and cultural representations of race and identity through Aboriginal histories and experiences.
After this, join Daniel Hansen in the PICA Reading Room for the Waangkiny Yira Wordshop! Let Daniel lead you through discovering identity and voice, and the ways they work together in reclaiming strength, confidence and space. Daniel will share language, and his story on how spoken word in language has connected him with culture and community. Drawing inspiration from HATCHED 2019, Daniel will then guide us through the creation of a spoken word piece grounded in identity and voice.
Poetic Reflections Part 2 returns to the Gallery with a fresh group of inspired poets, invited to perform with HATCHED 2019 artworks that have inspired them.
