Forgotten Collections: The Private Museum of Captain Matthew McVicker-Smyth

Presented by Professor Andrea Witcomb, Deakin University
The discovery of five photographs in 2018 led to a forgotten, private collection by Captain Smyth. In addition to mineral specimens, there were extensive, aesthetically organised displays of Australian Aboriginal artifacts, ornaments and decorative paintings.
The collection, built from 1911 to 1939 reflects a particular moment in the history of colonialism in which the development of extractive industries went hand in hand with the dispossession of Aboriginal people. Join the discussion of how such private collections came into existence and what the knowledge of their existence might mean today.
