Open by Duotone is the latest incarnation of the Duotone brand. Like its similarly named City of Perth cousin (Duotone) it’s a mecca of tasty food and good coffee, albeit with a more sit-n-stay vibe – the café has a lot more seating than its smaller counterpart. They also cater for a lot of food intolerances too. 

GARUM

There are few things more thrilling in this world than the thought of a brilliantly-executed buffet breakfast. Garum have absolutely nailed this one, covering all your usual suspects (sausages, bacon, cereals, fruit, bread etc.) and then going above and beyond with cannoli, an assortment of tarts, donuts, crispy potatoes, salads, pastries and more. The buffet is expertly complemented by an equally wonderful a ’la carte menu should you require a little more structure to your breakfast dining. 

HENRY LITTLE

Can’t decide what you feel like in the AM? I feel that. Enter, Henry Little’s decadent brekkie board. It’s an absolute feast, comprising of a dippy egg, sourdough soldiers, salmon, herbed mushrooms, granola, orange juice, avocado, mixed seeds and feta. They also offer delicious homemade crumpets, served with prosciutto, brie and truffle oil, and a seriously drool-worthy toastie list. If you love all things savoury, this brekkie menu will make you weak at the knees. 

HENO AND REY

You know Heno and Rey do great tapas and cocktails, but did you know they also offer brekkie? We’re talking options like wood charred bacon and fried eggs with wood-fired Turkish bread, beautiful buttermilk pancakes and granola with Greek yoghurt, berries and honeycomb, all served in a beautiful, artistic interior.

GORDON STREET GARAGE

High ceilings, a funky fit out and a buzzing atmosphere sum up this West Perth icon. The café is pretty big, so you can generally always get a seat, and it’s got a great little outdoor area out the back that’s perfectly suited to latte-sipping in the sunshine. Food-wise, their menu is excellent, but a special mention is needed for their French toast and corn fritters.  Another special mention is also required for the fact that they offer morning cocktails. Aperol spritz with our avo? Yes please. 

OBVIOUSLY a place dedicated entirely to waffles was going to crack the list, and very delicious waffles at that. While these guys don’t open until 1pm, I feel that can be overlooked due to their incredible flavour range (Tim Tam Slam waffles anyone? Peanut butter mousse perhaps?). They’re also open late which means you can most definitely have breakfast for dinner.

LA VEEN

Great coffee and brilliant brunch are the defining features of this corner café located in the King Street precinct of the City of Perth. You won’t be able to go past their ricotta omelette with garlic sautéed spinach, crispy kale, house made ricotta, and toasted almond flakes and herbs, but, be sure to leave room for one of their sweet dishes – the pancakes with white chocolate mousse are NOT to be missed. 

MARY STREET BAKERY

Three words for you – Freshly. Baked. Donuts. Perth institution Mary Street Bakery’s Allendale Square venue is the perth-fect destination for the baked good fiend. You’ll be able to enjoy a cronut, cruffin or cake, alongside such brekkie menu hits as their green falafel heirloom tomato dish, served with cucumber, tahini, yoghurt, mint and dukkah, or maybe even their much-loved house smoked brisket with a sweet potato fritter.

KINKY LIZARD

Tucked away amongst the peaceful streets of East Perth is this local favourite, Kinky Lizard Espresso Bar. If it’s a classic smashed avocado, big brekkie or tasty fritter you’re after, head here. And be sure to schedule in a leisurely stroll before or after your brunch, there are some beautiful parks in East Perth and its proximity to the water makes for a relaxing, scenic wander. 

SMALL PRINT

Coffee fanatic? Then you have to try the “coffee flight” from Small Print. It’s essentially a coffee tasting board and features their single origin of the day, a coffee of your choice and their batch brew of the day. Once you’re sufficiently caffeinated, take a squiz at their brekkie menu. They’ve got everything from smashed avocado with herbed ricotta and pistachio dukkah to a beautiful coconut and mango bavarois. If that hasn’t filled you up yet, they also offer a variety of hand-crafted cakes by their own in-house pastry chef.
