But if you missed out…. last Thursday 2nd May, SpacetoCo and Sofar Perth kicked off the first of a five-night-set of gigs. Those punters lucky enough to get through the Sofar lottery found themselves in a playful space for kids of all ages. A milk crate stage, huge ball pit, bean bag chairs and a giant scrabble board behind the bands set the scene for a night of fun, good vibes and big-kid-feels.
Located down at Point Fraser in East Perth, Embargo Bar is a beautiful and impressive venue. Space sharing platform SpacetoCo, who are always on the lookout for amazing spaces immediately saw huge potential in such a playful, unique pop-up location. ‘Where else in Perth can you get a room to accommodate 100+ people, with stage, playful theme, adjacent bar and a river location? It’s definitely one of those special Perth spaces’. Said Sofar Perth organiser, Paul Clegg.
Secret spaces aside, the room held three incredible performances. First up was Stacey Ann - a highlight being the 3 female vocal acapella of Fleetwood Mac hit, Dreams. Following a short recess, Perth based soul/electro pop musician, Elwyn and her band jumped out of the ball pit and up on stage to deliver a powerful vocal set. Close your eyes and you might be listening to Florence Welch. The crowd enjoyed Elywn’s storytelling banter between songs. Good Grace then closed out the evening with a punchy set. It wasn’t long before lead singer Johannah Grace had the room singing along to the chorus, “I could love you if you tell me when”.
In and around the scene is a team of photographers, sound support and Sofar crew. They’re all volunteers and it’s their efforts that provide a $100 experience for $10 night out. Their work is professional and beautiful every single time.
As for Embargo Bar, they enjoyed a busier night than they normally would on a chilly Thursday night in May… and 120 punters who accessed a space and place they may otherwise have not known about.
When epic spaces, incredible local music talent and City of Perth campaigns collide - you get a little bit of magic. Nights like these are one-time shows that come with intrigue, music appreciation and even the chance to sing along with a room full of strangers.
So… interested in one of the other gigs? You’ll need to register via the website - tickets are drawn out of a ballot and those lucky to attend will be sent the location and gig details 24 hours prior to the night. What kind of music can you expect? Sofar gigs usually stick to a set genre for each gig. These range from acoustic folk to hip hop R&B to everything in between… it’s all part of the secret.
