The main offenders are usually the wrapping paper, packaging and the large amounts of food that goes uneaten. So how can you do your part to make this Christmas merry for your family and the environment?
We’ve listed some helpful tips to reduce your environmental impact to create a more sustainable Christmas. By following these tips, you can give more to the environment as well as your loved ones.
Have a Merry Sustainable Christmas!
1. Gift experiences or purchase green gifts
Look-out for amazing experiences that you can gift to your loved ones as these are a great waste-free way to enjoy Christmas. It could be a voucher to get a massage at a spa, have a go at axe throwing or to wine and dine at one of Perth’s many restaurants.
If you are looking to gift something to keep, check if the product is environmentally friendly and third-party certified, such as Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified. Potted plants or second-hand gifts can also be a winner – and you can support local City of Perth charities in the process. An E-card is also a wonderful, waste-free alternative to traditional cards.
Lastly, have some fun with your creative side and make home-made gifts and cards for that special someone. Think gifts like pots of jam or chutney, delicious smelling soaps or propagated plants. Perth City Farm is holding DIY Christmas Workshops throughout December - an easy way to get your sustainable Christmas sorted.
