Travel restrictions have meant most interstate and international tours have rescheduled, leaving WA artists to fill the void - which is absolutely fine by me! This is an opportune time to go out and support our local venues whilst checking out WA artists whether new or old favourites. Firstly a big welcome back to the iconic Ellington! It’s been far too long between drinks and they’re coming back stronger than ever with Matty T Wall. Wall is an exceptional blues-rock guitarist who has scored himself three Number One Blues albums in Australia along with a number of international award nominations. He’ll take to the stage with an equally accomplished band featuring Ric Whittle and Leigh Miller. This is one for people who not only love gritty blues but moreover who appreciate watching extraordinary musicians in their element.

If you’re looking for a soul gig that is going to stay with you, then my recommendation is Natalie Gillespie. The Perth singer/songwriter has a number of fans including Ian Moss and Paul Kelly and has toured the globe with Yothu Yindi. Her talent is delving deep into heartfelt matters that feel experiential for her audience and her voice is unforgettable. You’ll see Gillespie command the stage with her powerful presence and put on a brilliant show you’re going to absolutely enjoy.

Lucy’s continues to be the best place to head for killer hard core metal, pop-punk and everything in between. On Friday 14 August the basement will get hectic with local legends Scalphunter. Purveyors of punk rock, these guys have always blown away a crowd with their energetic and blistering live shows. After being stuck at home for months, I’m definitely in need of throwing off some excess energy. Along for the ride will be bands Nankasi and Desert Dogs who promise to tear it up.

This is a callout to all serious guitar heads (or if like me, air guitarists) out there - you’re not going to want to miss this. Badlands will play host to The Rorys, a band who pay homage to one of the lesser known greats of the guitar world, Irishman Rory Gallagher. Coming in at No. 57 in Rolling Stones Top 100 Guitarists of All Time Gallagher’s live shows were lauded as one of the best you could be witnessed to. Whilst Gallagher passed away 25 years ago, The Rorys continue the legacy with an electrifying show to celebrate the trailblazer.

There is so much to like about Ghost Care. Their take on indie-pop music just glows you up from the inside; they’re the perfect antidote to get you through winter. They’ve got a great knack for catchy, carefree tunes so it’ll no doubt be exciting to see what their next single will offer. Catch them playing at The Bird and you’ll also be rewarded with their mates Male de Mer and MYTHS playing support.
